Disney Plans to Create Marvel-Based Videogames

March 20, 2010 |16:52 | Disney Game  By : Team X

Disney Plans to Create Marvel-Based VideogamesOne of the biggest pieces of entertainment news of 2009 was the acquisition of Marvel, the comic book publisher, by The Walt Disney Company for about 4 billion dollars. Not a lot has been announced since then about the relation between the two companies but it seems that some of the first projects following the merger will be based around videogame incarnations of popular Marvel comic superheroes.

September 26, 2009 |11:45 | Disney Game  By : Team X

We already had an idea it was coming based on a teaser for next month's Game Informer, but now it's been confirmed -- Disney Interactive Entertainment will be revealing a new Mickey Mouse game in October.

Disney set to reveal new Mickey game this October

While we don't have much info, members of the press have received word to save the date for a launch event that will reveal the a Mickey game. The teaser invitation says it will be the announcement of an "iconic new title," but offers no more information.

All signs point to this being Junction Point Studios' title, rumored to be called Epic Mickey, and headed up by legendary game designer Warren Spector. Sources and leaks indicate that the title would have Disney's mouse using paint to alter and navigate a world that (if concept art leaks are any indication of the final product) may have a steampunk vibe.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 Interview with Guha Bala

September 9, 2009 |13:15 | Disney Game  By : Team X

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 Interview Guha BalaWe had a chance to sit down with Vicarious Visions President Guha Bala to discuss his studio's involvement in the Marvel Ultimate Alliance series, how they got a chance to make the sequel, the game's narrative and the series future post-Disney acquisition.

How did Vicarious Visions get tapped to make Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2? We did the game engine for X-Men Legends 1 and 2 and Marvel Ultimate Alliance. Every release of Marvel Ultimate Alliance, except for the DS release, were on our Alchemy Engine, so we've always had a connection to it [the game].

Last time on Marvel Ultimate Alliance we did the PSP and Wii versions...but the big accomplishment there with the engine was getting the same game out across the span of everything from PSP to Xbox 360 and PS3. It was a big technical challenge.

Summer movie video games seek to terminate stigma

April 11, 2009 |13:34 | Disney Game  By : Team X

Video games based on blockbuster movies typically get panned, yet shamelessly benefit from the buzz of their film inspirations. But the developers of this summer's movie games are more intent than ever on transforming gamers' groans into grins.

Summer movie video games seek to terminate stigma

"Movie games have a bad history," said Jeff Poffenbarger, senior producer at "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" game developer Raven Software. "There is a stigma to movie games, for a thousand different reasons. They come out and they don't live up to the hype people create. For us, it was all about creating the definitive Wolverine experience, not recreating the movie."

Traditionally, movie games are daunting to develop because they face opening-day deadlines yet take double the time to produce as the films they are based on. Veteran game director Joby Otero, chief creative officer at "Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen" developer Luxoflux Studios, said upgrading the genre's quality has become a primary goal in recent years.

Disney's new racing video game at core of big bet

March 11, 2009 |12:11 | Disney Game  By : Team X

Walt Disney Co. is taking the wraps off an advanced new car racing video game that the entertainment company hopes will bolster its success in the lucrative gaming sector. As sales of video games prove relatively resilient in the economic downturn, Disney is betting that it can prosper broadly from new games that it makes on its own. Rather than licensing Disney content out to game publishers, Disney's in-house gaming team wants to generate video game characters and story lines that can be the basis of movies as well.

"That is the Holy Grail for video games, to see them successfully become franchises," Graham Hopper, head of Disney's game division, told The Associated Press. To that end, the company is investing in projects like the latest from its Brighton, England-based Black Rock Studio, a car racing game called "Split/Second" for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PCs, set within the world of a reality television show.

With a release date of early 2010, the studio behind last year's off-road racing game "Pure" has employed new graphics-rendering technologies to pit racers against both the track and explosions triggered by competitors. A sneak preview to the AP showed a race track on an airport stage set, complete with an air traffic control tower that can come crashing to the ground.

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa DVD Review

February 12, 2009 |14:19 | Disney Game | Disney Movies  By : Team X

Madagascar Escape 2 Africa DVD ReviewDreamWorks Animation has had more than their fair share of box office hits this decade. After a string of films making less than expected, 2001's Shrek (the company's second CG feature) grossed an impressive $267 million domestically alone.

Since then, only one of the studio's CG features (2006's Flushed Away) has failed to break the $100 million mark stateside. When DreamWorks' Madagascar finished with $193 M in 2005, a sequel seemed inevitable. Such expectations were met in November of 2008 with the arrival of Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa.

After a prologue that mixes new material with recaps of the original, the movie starts with our four leads -- Alex the lion (voiced by Ben Stiller), Marty the zebra (Chris Rock), Melman the giraffe (David Schwimmer), and Gloria the hippo (Jada Pinkett Smith) -- heading on a refurbished plane back home to New York.
