Jessica Alba's Holiday Weekend Trip To Disneyland

Posted in : Disneyland

(added few months ago!)

Taking advantage of the holiday break, Jessica Alba joined husband Cash Warren in treating their two girls Honor Marie and Haven Garner to a trip to Disneyland in Anaheim, CA. For the Thanksgiving weekend adventure, the fabulous foursome was joined by Jessica's parents as the group rode the rides, watched a big parade and chowed down at the theme park's snack stands.

Jessica Alba's Holiday Weekend Trip To Disneyland

Giving his actress wife and their baby a breather, Cash took Honor on her favorite ride a few times while Jessica stayed back to rest with Haven and her parents. After getting the fill of the Magic Kingdom, Jessica and family closed out the fun-filled visit by loading Honor onto the merry-go-round for a final spin, with an appreciative Miss Alba tweeting shortly after her Thanksgiving holiday getaway, "Thank you Kevin for making our trip to Disneyland so incredibly amazing 4 my family!"

Disneyland for adults

Grey Cup: it's about friendship and tradition. It's kind of fitting that I do this article to kick off my Grey Cup coverage in The Province. The 2005 Grey Cup in Vancouver was the first one I attended full-on and the one that got me hooked enough to attend every one since. I met a lot of great people that year who are still great friends today, and if it's your first Grey Cup Festival, I'm sure you'll do the same.

There isn't really a better way to describe Grey Cup, in my opinion, than to steal a line from the CFL's great "This is our league" video: "For one Sunday in November it's the nation's glue."Fans from all teams embark on a pilgrimage to the host city to send out the CFL season with a bang, and I mean a bang.

My friend and CFL super fan, Lori Bursey from Toronto, calls Grey Cup week "Disneyland for adults," and she's not wrong. She adds, "I can act and drink like a 20-year-old every night, but my body reminds me every morning that I'm not!"

The people that make this pilgrimage each year are the true fans of this league, who have stood by their teams and this league though the good years, and the bad. One familiar face to many Grey Cup revellers is my good friend Bruce Findley from Ottawa, or "Brewster" as he is affectionately known. This year will mark his 25th Grey Cup, and 20th for his nephew Tim "Timbo" Moffat, who is a Ticats fan living in Regina. Brewster wears a quarterback wristband, listing each day's events, with those he intends to attend highlighted ... just in case there is a memory lapse.

My friend Brian "Eskinator" Edwards from Edmonton, along with his wife Linda Wood Edwards, have also been to multiple Grey Cups. Brian is recognized by many in our group for coining the phrase "CFL Fellowship." They have traditions that they follow annually, such as a carnivore night and a pasta night that are held at the host cities' finer establishments. Brian also highly recommends finding a "home" bar, where you can rest your feet between all the other parties. Linda has a book in which she records all the funny quotes that occur throughout the week, and she keeps a running total of drinks consumed over the five days. It's quite impressive.

While many arrive the day before to meet up with friends before the storm, there is one kickoff to Grey Cup that the regulars do not miss. Four o'clock on Thursday afternoon is the unofficial kickoff to Grey Cup Week at the Spirit of Edmonton hospitality room, this year held at the Sheraton Wall Centre. The Spirit is the party that has set the bar for all others during Grey Cup Week. They have it down pat, and it's the official reunion party of Grey Cup. If you want to get the full Grey Cup experience, I highly recommend the Spirit on Thursday night. It also runs through the weekend, but is harder to get into on those nights.

With the Lions in the big game, it's going to be an exciting week for B.C. fans. In my column on Sunday, I'll touch on what Grey Cup week is like when your team is in the game, and the nerves that come on the big day itself.

The Grey Cup is a celebration of the CFL, but it's also a celebration of our country and our culture. It is Canada at its very best. I hope to add you to my list of CFL/Grey Cup friends in 2011!

Happy Grey Cup, everyone! Brian Wawryshyn runs the B.C. Lions fan website bclionsden.ca. He also blogs for Province Sports after every game. Check out his game-day column in Sunday's Province and his postgame thoughts at provincesports.com/blogs.

Kinect Disneyland Adventure review

Posted in : Disneyland

(added few months ago!)

For anyone that has kids, spends time with kids, or even just remembers being a kid, the properties of Disney have made an impact on their lives. It is unavoidable — Mickey Mouse and his cohorts are iconic, and their presence can be found around the world regardless of race, creed or geographic boundaries.

The Disney franchise has decades of history, and even today continues to churn out new properties, thus guaranteeing another generation of fans. Even if you hate Disney, it is hard to deny the appeal that a place like Disneyland. There is something for everyone, and the company has been masterful in creating the Magic Kingdom, a place for families to steep themselves in the lore of the company’s mythology. But while it is a place that continues to be a destination location, it isn’t a place that most can justify going to often. That is where Kinect Disneyland Adventures comes in.

The game is a realistic portrayal of the real Disneyland, crossed with the fantasy that people have created in their own minds around it. It really is designed more as an experience than a game. The game is an idealized digital recreation of Disneyland that is loosely accurate to the real place, with eight zones including places like Futureland, Mickey’s Toontown, Adventureland and more. Each has its own theme, complete with famous characters that match that theme.

When you first begin, you are greeted by Mickey, as well as your guide that helps you figure out what to do and where to go. Once you have had a brief explanation of what is going on, you are then tasked with several mini-quests that introduce you to the various characters and locations found in Disneyland. As you complete objectives for characters, you will inevitably be brought to one of the 15 challenges, all of which are based on famous rides and properties, so things like the The Hunted Mansion and Matterhorn appear along with Alice in Wonderland and Winnie the Pooh.

The challenges typically have multiple games within, and they range in quality. Some are simple movement games where you must mimic the on screen movements, while others are a bit more involved and require you to do things like avoid obstacles as you fall down the rabbit hole. They vary in challenge and quality, but the menu allows you to pick and choose the events you’d like to participate in at any time if the guided tour isn’t appealing to you.

While the games try to present themselves differently, there is a clear favorite in terms of gameplay. There are a few original game modes, including things specific to Disney’s properties like pointing a flashlight at ghosts in The Haunted Mansion, but the most common game will have you dodging obstacles as you fall, slide, or otherwise travel downwards. These games will be great for kids, but it will quickly feel like more of the same for adults.

But then again, this game isn’t made for adults. Several of the missions in the park itself will be basic fetch-and-carry objectives as you follow a guided path to pick up lost items or talk to other characters. They are simple and repetitive, but they also expose you to the various areas of the park itself at a decent pace.

Conclusion

A more cynical person may see this game as a giant ad for the Magic Kingdom, especially when you run into park information people who are there to pass on facts about how awesome Disneyland is, but again, this game is made for kids.

In terms of a game — just in terms of the gameplay – Kinect Disneyland Adventures is a fun and decent, although deceptively repetitive game that is able to hide the repetition through solid presentation. But for kids who are still at the point where they can revel in the magic and wonder of Disneyland, this game will make owning the Kinect worthwhile. It hits on all the proper notes that will make this game feel immersive, and while older gamers may not be as captivated by the gameplay, the nostalgia should still be there for them too.

Kinect Disneyland Adventures may not be the best Kinect game out there, but it is one of the best overall packages. The technology opens up a massive world to explore that is steeped in decades of history, imagination, and fun that Disney has helped create. If you can’t book a trip to Florida, Disneyland Adventures isn’t a bad alternative.

Hong Kong Disneyland hopes for expansion magic

Posted in : Disneyland

(added few months ago!)

Since opening to great fanfare in 2005, Disney's first park in China has struggled to attract the expected flood of visitors from the mainland. Stakes will rise with the planned opening of a rival Disneyland in Shanghai in several years.

Hong Kong Disneyland hopes for expansion magic

Thursday's opening of Toy Story Land, based on the blockbuster movie trilogy, is the first phase of a three-part, $468 million (296 million pounds) expansion that will increase the physical footprint of the park by 23 percent by 2013 and bring the number of attractions, shows and other exhibits to more than 100.

"We believe it will be a strong boost in terms of business," said Andrew Kam, Disneyland managing director. "I'm really happy about that too because, not only does it bring business to Hong Kong Disneyland, it actually creates demand for tourism to Hong Kong."

Among the three new attractions is a 25-metre (80-foot) "Toy Soldier Parachute Drop". Coming over the next two years are the "Grizzly Gulch" and "Mystic Point" theme areas. The park's performance has been difficult to gauge given Disney declined to fully disclose key results and attendance figures.

But last year, in its first major disclosure of its financial performance since opening, it announced a loss of $169.4 million in 2009 while attracting 4.6 million visitors. The Hong Kong government -- which has a 52 percent stake in the park with the Disney company holding the remainder -- expressed disappointment, calling on the park to improve.

Disneyland initially said it hoped to attract 10 million visitors a year after 15 years, but attendance has fallen short of targets. The park was the smallest Disney theme park. As part of the expansion deal, partly financed by Hong Kong, Disney pledged to boost the transparency of its operations by releasing annual operating and financial results.

Once the expansion is complete, visitor numbers are projected to rise to between 5.2 million and 8 million by 2015. "What I think we do best is to create these environments that completely immerse you," said Joe Lanzisero, creative senior Vice President, Walt Disney Co, at the opening.

"When you walk into our parks and you're no longer in the real world, you're transported to a completely different place."Visitors invited to the launch of the new area said they enjoyed it, despite the rain.

"Great view of the park when you get up to the top and it was just great dropping down," said Mandy Petty, who had just tried the Toy Soldier Parachute Drop. "It wasn't too scary, just within the comfort zone."

A Minute With: Jason Segel on Muppets and puppets

Posted in : Disneyland

(added few months ago!)

Now Segel, 31, stars in a big screen adaptation of "The Muppets," a family musical that debuts in theaters on November 23 in time for the U.S. Thanksgiving Day holiday.

A Minute With: Jason Segel on Muppets and puppets

The actor also co-wrote and is executive producer on the film, which follows a couple, Gary and Mary (Segel and Amy Adams, respectively), on a visit to Los Angeles with Gary's brother who happens to be a Muppet fan. When they discover an oilman plans to raze the Muppet Theater to drill a well, they convince the Muppets to reunite to save the theater.

Segel spoke to Reuters about the film, his love of puppets and his desire to channel his inner creep.

Q: Your filmography of raunchy comedies doesn't exactly scream family friendly films. What gives?

A: "'The Muppets' movie is right in my wheelhouse. It was nice to do something that was really pure and sweet and innocent. It's sort of a trade off. You can't do the raunchy jokes, but you get to do these totally Muppety jokes that you don't do in regular films. It was a fair trade off for me."

Q: What is about Muppets that appeals to you?

A: "I think what separates the Muppets (from other comedies) is that they never get laughs at other people's expense. Their jokes are kind and honest and pure. Even as an adult when you turn on the Muppets, you're reminded of the best version of yourself, that sense of wide-eyed wonder that the world beats out of you."

Q: Did you have a favorite Muppet?

A: "Kermit. I remember watching Kermit and thinking, that's who I want to be when I grow up. He's Tom Hanks, or Jimmy Stewart. He's the moral compass of the Muppets and he's the every man, the glue that holds it all together."

Q: And are you?

A: "I strive for it when I do my movies. I try to come across as the every man, but no one does it like Kermit."

Q: But Kermit didn't flash his genitalia like you did in 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall!"

A: "Have you ever seen Kermit wearing pants? Kermit did full frontal way before I did!"

Q: Speaking of "Sarah Marshall," your character in the film put on a puppet show and you yourself have been into puppetry for years. Where does that come from?

A: "I came of age during the Apple digital revolution, when they introduced Final Cut Pro and when digital cameras became accessible. All of a sudden you could make short films without needing an editing suite or renting equipment. I would write and make these short films but I had no one to participate with me. So I went to the toy store and I bought a bunch of puppets and did my short films with them."

Q: That hobby must be either very cool or very creepy when it comes to getting the ladies.

A: "Well I'm still single! There's some satisfaction that I've done 'The Muppets' because now this is my job, so there's some context to it. But there was a period where I was just the weird dude with puppets in his house."

Q: You first worked with the Henson company when they created the puppets for "Sarah Marshall." At what point did you feel brazen enough to pitch them a Muppet movie?

A: "I was born without a sense of shame! (Laughs) What really hit me was that the last Muppet movie was 12 years ago. Kids ages zero to 12 have grown up without a Muppet movie in their lives and that seemed wrong to me. They were such an influence on who I am and who I became that I just put my head down and said, 'I'm gonna make a new Muppet movie.' I would not take no for an answer."

Q: You're on a hit sitcom, you do R-rated comedies and now family films. What else do you want to play?

A: "I really want to play a villain. I keep walking the line between charming, accessible and creepy and I always fall on the charming and accessible side. For once, I'd like to fall on the creepy side."

Disneyland for his last birthday

Posted in : Disneyland

(added few months ago!)

Not everyone is as fortunate as this group of 10 friends, who stayed in the world of Mickey, Pluto, Donald and others for as many as 190 days and were present at the Walt Disney World at Mickey's 82 birthday last year. For them, it was a dream land, which they fondly remember on Disney kings' 83rd birthday.

Even though it was a study trip, they made sure not to miss any magical movement of the toon world. Priyanka Wadera, one of the teammates said, "In India, Mickey's birthday is not such a big occasion as in Disney. They had huge celebrations on his birthday. I remember they distributed candies and hot chocolates to all of us. Back in United States, people are crazy about the Disney World. It is a fairy land of which Mickey is the boss."

Vishwani Mahajan, another teammate said, "Not a single amusement park in India can be compared to Disney. It is actually a world of toons that everyone must visit once in life. There you will find Mickey on everything, from cakes to sweets. In the US, people gathered money so that they could visit Disney on Mickey's birthday. It was just amazing and the best part was that we were handed over our degrees by Mickey and Mini."Another lucky member Abhishek said, "They had Mickey fireworks, free coupons, discounts on big Mickey toys and made sure everyone was treated with something."

Tokyo Disneyland To Make 'Star Wars' Ride 3-D

Posted in : Disneyland

(added few months ago!)

Tokyo Disneyland will revamp its attraction based on the "Star Wars" film series, with a 3-D version to launch in the spring of 2013, the operator of the theme park said Wednesday. Oriental Land Co. (4661) plans to spend roughly 7 billion yen on the first overhaul of Star Tours since the ride debuted in 1989.

Star Tours offers simulated space travel by having riders board a cabin that moves in line with the video being shown. The 3-D version will run for 4 minutes and 30 seconds, the same duration as the existing ride, but will feature more than 50 story variations in an aim to attract repeat customers. The current Star Tours ride is slated to end on April 1. At Tokyo Disneyland, 3-D video technologies are currently being used in Captain EO, which features the late singer Michael Jackson, and Mickey's PhilharMagic.

Kinect Disneyland Adventures review: Pirates and pixie dust (Watch Video)

Posted in : Disneyland, Videos

(added few months ago!)

For the better part of five years, I worked as  Disney cast member. I spent day after day learning the biggest secrets of a company that protects that to no end and as a result, I lost what Disney and its fan know as “the magic.” The extraordinary became mundane,  and in a weird way, I began to step away. Who knew it would take a virtual trip back to reignite my love.

In that sense, Kinect Disneyland Adventures does its job, and it does it very well; you’re constantly reminded of just what’s right about the Disney company and its brands, especially if you play with those familiar with the park. As a game though, it’s more of a mixed bag. It’s really fun and a cool demonstration of the tech behind Kinect to interact with the characters, but basic mechanics like moving around feel incredibly complicated, and will make you practically hate the experience. Still, I can’t help but recommend
Kinect Disneyland Adventures for all of its charm, especially if you’re big on the park itself.

The idea behind Disneyland Adventures is simple, guide your avatar through the Disneyland park and go on adventures and quests as given to you by Disney characters. Now, this is a very idealized version of the famous theme park, there are no lines, the cast members all speak English, it’s not crowded, and you’re able to walk directly up to any of the characters at anytime. Curiously enough — there’s always a crowd around the characters, but no one — but you, ever goes up to them.  To the game’s credit, the Disneyland in the game is pretty accurate compared to the real deal; I was able to run around, without looking at the map, and get where I needed to go just based on my memory of the parks. Of course, some changes have been made for the sake of gameplay, but those are few and far between. The permanent popcorn carts and stands are even in the right place, impressive for a game that basically serves as a commercial.

The characters are also impressive in their recreations. For instance, we found Captain Hook outside of Peter Pan’s Flight in Fantasyland, and one of the options is to extend your arms in a hug motion to interact in that way with the characters, and while everyone from Mickey and Donald to Cinderella and Buzz Lightyear was happy to give a squeeze, Captain Hook (along with the rest of the Villains for that matter) were unsure of what to do and seemed very confused when we tried. Of course, this is a Disney game and every villain has a heart of gold deep down inside, so we eventually got our hug. There’s a fair number of interactions with each character, like dancing and signing autographs. The autographs are one of the game’s coolest feature, as you’ll gain points for collecting different autograph books (there’s one for heroes, one for villains, one for Princesses and so on) and getting the right characters to sign them. I was at first a bit annoyed that I had to do so much backtracking, but it became incredibly fun to dash around the parks with different books.

Each character you find will give you a different quest to go on in the park, whether it be giving something to another character, tracking something down or going to one of the attractions. The attractions are where the Kinect capabilities really come in. The rides and shows take the form of motion themed mini games, where you’ll interact with the attraction and its story. Much like The Disneyland park itself, these are idealized versions inspired by the attractions, so instead of actually going on the Matterhorn itself, you’ll be bobsledding down a hill and trying to evade the Yeti. A lot of these worlds are pretty cool, like the Haunted Mansion inspired world, which finds you hunting ghosts with a flashlight while the famous Ghost Host narrates your adventure. The worlds are given a more cell shaded look than the rest of the game, which lends a classic animation feel to them. The best part of all of this again is just how right they got everything, with the Ghost Host in the Haunted Mansion, Captain Hook and Smee in the Peter Pan levels and even the corny jokes in the Jungle Cruise section.

Now, it can be pretty hard to walk in a Disney park because of the crowds, but even though they are pretty much non existent in the game, it’s an incredibly frustrating experience just to walk. Kudos to the developers for trying to not just making it an on-rails game like most Kinect developers, but there’s simply got to be a better way. You move around the game by holding your hand up; holding it straight causes you to move forward while moving to the left or right has you moving in that direction and putting your hands to your side to stop. When it works, it’s great, but unfortunately, it doesn’t work a lot. The slightest movement will cause your character to shoot off into another direction — just hope you don’t get into a corner, as it’s going to be hell to get out of it.

Things get worse when you start unlocking different items to use like a magic wand or a megaphone. You gain these items by lifting your hand up and selecting them from a pop up wheel. While it may sound simple, the game has a hard time registering whether you’re trying to pick an item, or run forward and it’s incredibly frustrating. At one point I had the wand equipped, and saw the same teacup animate probably 20 times because the game wouldn’t register that I was just trying to put it back. On that same note, the voice controls are pretty superb. While they weren’t perfect, the game was incredibly responsive a good portion of the time.

The Blast Factor:  It may be a pain to get around, but Kinect Disneyland Adventures does its job of reminding you just why you love the  Disney parks. You’ll interact with your favorite characters, go on your favorite rides (sort of) and even find some secrets hidden around the park. The game is at its best when its played by families and kids get excited when they see their favorite characters. At the very least, it serves as a running commercial for the Parks.
