An Eerie Tour Of The Knockoff Disney World That China Abandoned A Decade Ago

Posted in : Disney World

(added few months ago!)

Not all construction projects in China turn into ghost towns: some turn into ghost amusement parks.
Wonderland was supposed to be a fantastic amusement park just 45 minutes outside of Beijing, on the way to the Great Wall. Judging from the partially built castle, it was clearly meant to resemble Disney. Construction of Wonderland, which was supposed to be the largest amusement park in Asia, halted over a decade ago because of land disputes and insufficient funds. Now it's an abandoned skeleton overrun by wild dogs The locals told Reuters' David Gray that the developers ran out of money, and they probably won't ever come back now.  Locals have begun slowly migrating into the abandoned buildings and planting crops in the vast fields surrounding Wonderland.

Disney To Bring "Avatar" World To Life

Posted in : Disney Movies

(added few months ago!)

The top grossing film of all time "Avatar", raking in 2.8 billion in global box office, will soon jump off the silver screen and into the gloved hands of Mickey Mouse at Orlando's Walt Disney World.

Thanks to the recent acquisition of global theme park rights, Disney has chosen lush Animal Kingdom to be the first of its parks to create Avatar-themed lands with rides, entertainment and dining based on the blockbuster action-adventure-fantasy film.

"We're going to start with the creation of the world, a world that will be very believable, immersive, you'll be able to immerse yourself into a physical space. I'm sure there's going to be a good deal of special effects associated as well," said Disney President and CEO Bob Iger.

Construction is set to begin by 2013, with a timeline for completion that will allow Disney to incorporate storylines from Cameron's planned "Avatar" sequels, bringing Pandora to life at a rumored cost of a half billion dollars.

With the huge success of Universal's Wizarding World of Harry Potter phenomenon practically next door, one can't help but think this might be a "can you top this" move. "No, this isn't designed to compete with them, we compete with them already and fairly well," Iger said. Avatar at Disney's Animal Kingdom is expected to take three years to build, with an opening set for 2016.

Disney World building time shares next to Grand Floridian hotel

Posted in : Disney World

(added few months ago!)

The Walt Disney Co.'s time-share business said Thursday it will build an addition to Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, the highest-priced company-owned hotel at Walt Disney World.

Disney World building time shares next to Grand Floridian hotel

The project, which will add approximately 147 time-share units in a separate building next to the posh hotel, is the first new Disney Vacation Club resort to begin construction since the global financial crisis sent sales tumbling across the time-share industry.

Disney said the resort is expected to open in late 2013. The new building will be exclusively time-share units and will include a children's water-play area, among other amenities.

The project should inject some high-demand inventory into Disney Vacation Club, which was one of Disney Co.'s fastest-growing businesses before sales ebbed during the recession and the anemic recovery that has followed. The Victorian-themed Grand Floridian is Disney World's most luxurious hotel and is adjacent to the Magic Kingdom, the busiest theme park on the planet with more than 17 million visitors a year.

It will be the second time-share property Disney has built along the Magic Kingdom monorail, joining Bay Lake Tower, an addition to Disney's Contemporary Resort that opened in August 2009.

"We continually look for ways to expand Disney Vacation Club by creating resort experiences that our members will love," Claire Bilby, senior vice president and general manager of Disney Vacation Club, said in a prepared statement. "With the continued popularity of Bay Lake Tower at Disney's Contemporary Resort, we are thrilled to offer our members and guests a new resort option along the monorail system with easy access to the Magic Kingdom Park, as well as a variety of shopping, dining and recreation experiences."

Although Disney does not report specific financial results for its time-share business, the company said sales of Disney Vacation Club units fell during its most recent quarter, which ended Oct. 1. Disney is currently peddling interests in four resorts: Bay Lake Tower, Disney's Animal Kingdom Villas, and Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa, all of which are at Disney World; and Aulani, a hotel and time share the company opened this summer in Hawaii.

At its peak, Disney Vacation Club generated roughly $190 million a year in operating profit. The Grand Floridian addition will be Disney's 12th time-share property.

Disneyland, hotel workers reach contract agreement

Posted in : Disneyland

(added few months ago!)

The Walt Disney Company and the union representing hundreds of hotel workers at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim have come to a five-year agreement. The new contract will include wage increases, affordable health care and decreased workloads for housekeepers. It also provides job security and seniority protection for both full-time and part-time workers. The union still has to vote on the contract, but it's expected to pass.

The agreement would put an end to a nearly four-year dispute that led workers to stage a series of protests. The workers' contract expired in February 2008. A key sticking point in negotiations was a free health care plan for maids, bell hops, cooks and dishwashers at three Disney-owned hotels that the resort wanted to eliminate.

Doc Holiday answers travel questions

Posted in : Disneyland

(added few months ago!)

WE'RE thinking of taking our two daughters (aged 42 and 43) and our granddaughter, 12, to Disneyland for our golden wedding anniversary. We'd like to know the difference between the Hong Kong and California Disneylands and whether the Hong Kong equivalent is a good substitute.

Doc Holiday answers travel questions

DOC: Well, if nothing else your letter proves that it's never too late to take your children to Disneyland, wherever that may be. Personally my choice, having visited neither, would be Hong Kong Disneyland the newest of the Disney theme parks, since it's a shorter and more affordable flight from Australia and just consider all of those shopping opportunities.

Then again, Disneyland in California does have a 55-year-old heritage as well as more attractions.
Sean Harrigan from Disney in Australia (disney.com.au) says the California park is "the original Disneyland" and the one most Australians think of when people mention they are going to Disneyland.
"It has two theme parks Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park," Harrigan says. "Taking into account all the attractions and entertainment on offer you will probably need three days to see it all."
Although smaller in size compared with the other Disney parks, Hong Kong Disneyland draws "the best of the best" attractions and entertainment from the various Disney destinations, taking shows otherwise only found at Walt Disney World, Florida (Festival of the Lion King) and onboard the Disney Cruise Line (Golden Mickeys), plus attractions from both US destinations.

Harrigan says that, should you opt for Hong Kong, you would probably need to allocate a day and a half to fit in all of its attractions. Hong Kong Disneyland is on Lantau Island and is the only Disneyland to feature a mountain backdrop, which makes it especially photogenic.

The whole park also features an amazing range of plant-life and gardens which, as Harrigan says, takes you out of the "traditional mindscape of what you expect a major city like Hong Kong to be". For the ages mentioned there is something for all to do at both locations. "More thrill rides are definitely to be found in California, Hong Kong Disneyland has a few as well plus the new "Toy Story Land", Harrigan points out.

COULD you please explain overseas car insurance?

We want to be covered for most eventualities and always have Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) which is included in the car hire rate. But that does not cover the Collision Damage Waiver Excess (CDWE).  We always have travel insurance and that covers us for the aforementioned CDWE up to about the same dollar amount that car rental companies list. When the car rental company offers Personal Accident Insurance I say no because we have our travel insurance to cover it. Am I correct in doing it this way?

DOC: The Doc approached the team at Travel Insurance Direct (travelinsurancedirect.com.au) for an answer to your question.

A spokeswoman for TID says that it's important to know what cover you really need when you're hiring a car and what is already covered by your travel insurance. She explains that quality travel insurance normally automatically includes coverage for your excess should you damage your hire car, so you may not need to pay extra for this. Similarly if you have an accident, your own medical expenses, including repatriation home with a medical team if required, also are covered by quality travel insurance policies. That's important because while the damage to the car may only be worth $10,000, the cost of overseas medical care and repatriation can easily mount up to hundreds of thousands of dollars, especially in the US.

Good travel insurance policies also cover the cost of your family travelling to visit you in hospital overseas if you've had a serious accident. However, travel policies do not cover liabilities arising from the operation of any vehicle such as injuries to other drivers or passengers or property damage. For that reason Travel Insurance Direct warns travellers to make sure that the limit of liability offered by the car-hire company is sufficient for the country in which they are travelling. In some places the legal minimum amount of insurance required (often known as the "sum insured") is nowhere near the amount required to protect you from lawsuits in the event of a serious accident.

So, do take the time to read the fine print on this and be prepared to upgrade the level offered by the car-hire company to a higher amount, which will afford more protection. THIS year it looks as if I will be spending Christmas alone. Rather than staying at home I'd like to travel somewhere. Any ideas of what I could do that won't break the bank?

DOC:
Worry not (though do get cracking as Christmas is near). The world is your egg-nog, er, oyster. The Doc cultivated Barry Mayo, from TravelManagers (www.travel managers.com.au), a network of 300 holiday advisers who come to you rather than you going to them, who says that if you want to meet women of all ages, I would recommend a surf or yoga retreat in Bali.

"At Christmas time it is more expensive than usual but Bali always has amazing value," he says. "You'll also find women from their early 20s through to 50s at these retreats whereas at surf retreats in Australia you are more likely to find younger backpackers."Mayo says it's also a great time to go to Tasmania and join a walking tour in some of "Australia's most beautiful scenery in a perfect climate surrounded by fresh Tasmanian produce such as sparkling wines, cheeses and seafood". It's low season in the Outback but for a cooler experience you could try opal mining and staying at one of the underground accommodations at White Cliffs, just a short drive from the magnificent Darling River Run.

Finally, the Solomon Islands is one of the friendliest places you will find. "Before you land you will make friends," Mayo declares. "It'll be peak season but the Solomons offer great value all year round."I WONDER if you know anything about accessing local currency in Buenos Aires, as I have heard that ATM withdrawals are limited for foreign visitors and charges are excessive.

Could we change Australian dollars in banks there without difficulty or would US dollars be a better way to go? It seems that Argentine pesos cannot be purchased through any source where I live. DOC: Ted Dziadkiewicz, from the Latin American tour experts Contours Travel (contourstravel.com.au), says that in Argentina "they don't know what our (Australian) currency looks like" so the best bet is to take US dollars with you.

It's also important to source clean notes so they are not thought to be counterfeit. "Accessing money through ATMs in Argentina is expensive, at around $US5 for every $US100 you withdraw," Dziadkiewicz says. "The best way to get Argentine pesos is to take your US dollars with you to a bank, along with your passport. "Banks have very fair exchange rates, security guards and cameras. The odds of receiving counterfeit money at a bank are slim. "Don't ever exchange money with a stranger and avoid casa de cambios (currency exchange outlets) because of the high exchange rates there. "An exception is one cambio I have found which everyone in the know visits in the Gallerias Pacifico (shopping mall) in the basement where the food court is located. They have excellent rates."

Several starts made a visit to Walt Disney World Friday to tape performances for Disney's Christmas special. Two of them took Orlando by storm. Just hours after Justin Bieber announced on Twitter ( @justinbieber) that he was headed to Walt Disney World, the teen idol has shared several photos of him and Jaden Smith hanging out around Orlando.

Bieber said he's in Central Florida to be part of the Disney Parks Christmas Day Parade. Parts of the the parade are being recorded Saturday at the Magic Kingdom, and will air at noon on Christmas Day.

Game review: Kinect Disneyland Adventures

Posted in : Disney Game

(added few months ago!)

Microsoft, with the aid of Frontier Developments (the folks responsible for Kinectimals and Rollercoaster Tycoon 3) have drafted in the House of Mouse to show us what the Kinect is capable of.  Come with me as Kinect Disneyland Adventures takes us on a virtual trip to the Happiest Place of Earth™!

Game review: Kinect Disneyland Adventures

I can’t think of any outfit more suited to bringing Disneyland to life than British developers, Frontier Developments. Their 2004 Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 is still considered the definitive theme park construction and management game. More recently, with Kinectimals, Frontier embraced Microsoft's motion-control technology bringing virtual animals to life and, using the Xbox Kinect, made them a fully interactive experience for children. Frontier Developments’ latest game mixes their obvious love of theme parks with their experience with the Kinect.

Kinect Disneyland Adventures provides a meticulous recreation of The Magic Kingdom, the main attraction and hub of every Disneyland resort around the world. Each real-world Magic Kingdom is subtly different to the rest, and so is the one brought to life in Kinect Disneyland Adventures. The game seems to take the best elements of each park (especially, I think, the one at Disneyland Paris). Just like its real counterparts, the park is made up off many different themed lands all radiating out from the castle at the centre.  Whilst the level of detail is commendable, the game really highlights just how many retail shops and restaurants the parks are filled with, all authentically recreated for your virtual enjoyment.

Unsurprisingly, Kinect Disneyland Adventures is totally Kinect controlled. Players, as guests in Disney’s virtual Magic Kingdom, navigate the park by making hand gestures. As is usually the case with Kinect titles, it takes some getting used to and you never really feel 100% in control. There where times when I wished that I could just pick up a controller and use it to simply wander around the park taking it all in, rather than fight with the Kinect.

The game can be played by one or two players using a very effective drop-in/drop-out co-op system. This also (conveniently) allows adults to continue long after the little ones have gone to bed. It’s worth noting that the usually temperamental Kinect sensor happily picked up an adult and a two-year-old player, a size difference that some other Kinects offerings can have trouble with.

Audio cues abound as very familiar ditties sound out from the park’s virtual speakers, be it the drunken sailor from Pirates of the Caribbean or the nauseating, and punishingly catchy, theme from It’s A Small World.

Throughout the park familiar Disney characters are available for autographs and hugs. Some of them also have tasks that they need help with. Obliging players will be rewarded with coins and the opportunity to level up, almost making Kinect Disneyland Adventures into a tween role-playing game type of affair.

Coins are also scattered around the park, which can be spent at many of the in-game retail shops. If only this was how it worked in the real parks, I’d have saved a fortune. As well as the shops, the park also features Kinect-enabled mini-game versions of the real-world park’s attractions.

The attractions are guaranteed to put a smile on children’s faces. But, no matter what the age of your inner child is, I can’t see adults really getting overly excited by the game’s content. As whimsical as they are, the attraction mini-games are a little basic and hard to fail at.

Kids are going to love Kinect Disneyland Adventures; the game features all their favourite characters in an incredibly accurate recreation of a Disney park, complete with the world-famous attractions. The cynic in me could very easily say that the game is no more than an interactive advert for Disneyland. I can see little kiddies and their parents alike being ‘inspired’ to travel to one of the real parks having experienced this virtual version. The Kinect controllers are as unrefined as ever, but the game doesn’t need much in the way of accuracy. For me it was one of the rare Kinect titles that I could enjoy with my two-year old lad. Seeing him reach out to instigate a virtual hug with Mickey Mouse and then watching his joyful expression was enough to convince me that this is a game worth having.

Disneyland Resort Update

Posted in : Disneyland

(added few months ago!)

The walls are down, the pool is open, and the "new" Disneyland Hotel is finally here. Though workers are still wrapping up detail work around the property, the majority of this phase of the hotel renovation ended earlier this month. After dealing with the construction wall maze for so many months, it's nice to just walk across the new center courtyard and explore the new lawns and landscaping.
