Both Starz and Disney have filed lawsuits against Dish Network. Dish is celebrating its 30th anniversary and provided some of its customers with free access to one of seven Starz channels for a year. Neither Starz nor Disney are pleased with this, and sued the network, accusing Dish of breaching the "pay television" sections of its contract, as well as copyright infringement.
On Thursday a judge denied the motion by Disney, after Dish told the judge that there couldn't be any copyright infringement due to the fact Dish licensed Disney's movies from Starz, which had an agreement with Buena Vista Television (Disney's television distributor).
The New York judge hasn't ruled on whether or not to dismiss the case, but he has denied Disney's attempts to block Dish from offering their movies for free. Meanwhile, Starz is also suing because of an agreement with Dish which says both parties have to execute a written agreement for any sort of "free preview" and the previews are usually for a limited time only. The Colorado judge in the Starz case has yet to make a ruling.
