This time last year, Miley Cyrus closed down Disneyland for her sweet 16 birthday party. This year the Hannah Montana star celebrated in the Canal Room in New York, but instead of inviting the world, the singer had only a few friends, family and rumoured boyfriend and movie co-star Liam Hemsworth in attendance.

It was a low-key affair compared to last year, a source said “but it was fun and she enjoyed it.” Another source told People magazine that it was a surprise party planned by Miley's mother, Tish. “Miley loves the '80s. The fashion, the big hair – she thinks it's so funky,” Tish Cyrus told the magazine of her daughter's 80's themed party. According to the magazine, even the cake fit the party theme. Designed by Buddy Valastro (TV's Cake Boss star), the four-tiered vanilla cake was Madonna-inspired with lace and a stage with purple accents.
